Teacher Training 2017 and a new La Guarderia

FA’s activities during Summer 2017 included this year’s training workshop for the teachers of La Guarderia - led by teachers at Havana’s International School - and the opening of the newest pre-school - whose renovation and operations are funded by FA - in Guanabacoa on the outskirts of Havana. La Guarderia Graduation and Education Conference

In June 2017, Fundacion Amistad contributed its ideas, advocacy, and financial support towards the education of Cuban youth across the spectrum - from pre-school to secondary education to post-graduate studies. Fundacion Amistad has partnered with the Cathedral of Havana to establish three pre-schools and daycare centers serving the children of disadvantaged families - largely the children of single mothers in Havana. In addition to supporting day-to-day operations, a key part of the program is providing training for the 40 teachers in innovative, new learning methodologies to help spur whole child development. An Ideas Symposium for Vedado

In October 2016, Fundacion Amistad led a symposium with Cuban and American architects, planner, preservationists and educators to explore revitalization ideas and opportunities for the Havana neighborhood of Vedado. Fundacion Amistad nominated Vedado to the World Monuments Fund’s 2016/2017 Watch list of the fifty most endangered places around the world. Download a copy here.

Ricardo Porro, one of Cuba’s greatest mid-twentieth century architects passed away in Paris on December 25, 2014. The architect, designer and teacher who was best known as the lead designer of Havana’s National Art School will be remembered by his wife Elena, his daughter Gabriela, as well as those who knew and loved his work.
