Fundación Amistad

What’s New

The following are projects that Fundación Amistad is working on.  As these projects are being planned and implemented, ongoing efforts are underway to seek foundation support.

Summer 2000

Fundación Amistad would like to invite three individuals who are directors or specialists in the environmental educational programs of their institutions to participate for four weeks in summer camp where environmental studies are taught to inner-city children.  These individuals will work with professionals from Boys Harbor, Duke University, and Antioch College, New England Graduate Center.  It is the hope that these Cuban professionals will experience an educational summer camp setting that will impact the summer experiences of Cuban children thereafter. The Cuban professionals will also have a chance to visit other organizations in the New York and Long Island that work on the environment.

July 2000

Fundación Amistad has invited of Dr. Fernando de la Conception Garcia Yip, a radiologist from the Cuban National Institute of Oncology and Radiology to attend the Chicago 2000 World Congress on Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering.  While in Chicago he will also attend a pre-Congress summer school on “New Techniques in Radiotherapy”.

Fundación Amistad together with the architectural and planning firm of Hardy Holzman and Pfeiffer Associates (HHPA) has invited Adriana Choy, a Cuban graduate architecture student, to participate in an educational internship at HHPA where she will work directly with the Director of Planning and Urban design.

August 2000

Fundación Amistad has invited two members of the Library a Casa de las Americas, a multi-faceted cultural and arts institution in Havana, to Attend and participate in the REFORMA Second National Congress on The Power of Language:  Planning for the 21st Century in Arizona during August 3 – 6, 2000.  Mr. Sierra Delgado will be making a presentation at the Congress about the library at Casa de las Americas.

After the Congress, Fundación Amistad together with the Northeast Chapter of REFORMA (Asociacion Nacional para Promover Servicios Bibliotecarios a la Poblacion de Habla Hispana) has arranged visits and meetings at other libraries in the New York City area, New Jersey, and Connecticut.  This exchange was made possible by a grant from the Ford Foundation.

September 2000

Fundación Amistad has been working very closely with the Maidstoners, a local East Hampton, NY softball team, which has recently returned from Cuba after playing a series of games with Cuban amateur teams in Havana and Pinar del Rio.  At the present, Fundación is working to arrange a visit for one of the Cuban teams to come and play softball with local softball teams in East Hampton.  We feel strongly that this exchange could be a positive effort to build bridges and understanding.

November 2000

American Academy of Pediatrics

A collaboration between Fundación Amistad and the American Academy of Pediatrics (“AAP”), Committee on Policy for School and Health Issues (“COSH”).  Fundación would like to bring a delegation from COSH to Cuba from November 6 – 13, 2000.  The delegation will meet with health officials from the Ministry of Public Health, the Ministry of Education, educators, administrators, pediatricians, and family medicine doctors.  The group will visit schools and clinics, such as the Clinica del Adolescente in Havana, and other Cuban entities.

Fundación Amistad believes this delegation and their interest in school health will impact the school health system in Cuba and directly complement the work of the Clinica del Adolescente who has been working with Havana area schools on the subject of mental health for children and adolescents.  The budget for this project is $15,000.
