Bridges to Culture

This initiative uses the power of art and architecture to surmount cultural, political and social boundaries to help increase understanding between the peoples of the U.S. and Cuba. Each year Bridges to Culture is able to bring Cuban/American art and cultural programs to the U.S. through funding and grants provided to Fundación Amistad. Over the years, the program has sponsored such projects as:

 

The Idea of Cuba

A book by documentary photographer Alex Harris. The photographer will begin his touring exhibition organized by the Southeast Museum of Photography in St. Augustine, Florida this year, displaying his works shown in the book. FA consulted on the photographers work and has become the key sponsor of the touring exhibit. For dates and locations of the exhibit, please visit the “Events“ page.

 

Habana/Harlem

A collaboration with Harlem Stage/Aaron Davis Hall, is a celebration of Cuban music and the innovation of contemporary artists with a focused selection of genres ranging from Afro-Cuban roots to indie-surfer rock, to the latest “timba“ rhythms - a hybrid of Cuban dance music with R&B and jazz inflections. Sharing Dreams: Cuban and American Graphic Designers Across the Digital Divide

This series of art was created in an annual cross-cultural exchange between Cuban and American graphic designers, who shared ideas and experiences to build a portal for a global design community. Accompanied by musical events, this exhibit was mounted at Queens College of the City University of New York from June 25th-August 9, 2007.

 

Kelvin Lopez Nieves Exhibition

A Cuban based artist’s exhibition at the Michael Connors Gallery in New York City. Nieves’ work has been exhibited in Cuba, Europe, Central America and the U.S. in 2007.

 

Casa de las Americas

Co-sponsored by Fundación Amistad since 1998, this prominent cultural and educational institution, located in Havana, has hosted a summer study abroad program at Duke University. Immersing undergraduates from Duke and other colleges in Cuban society and culture.
