10th Havana Biennial

Fundación Amistad has been invited to sponsor a major art exhibition, Chelsea Visits Havana, at The 10th Biennial of Havana, from March 27 to April 30, 2009. Organized by Fundación Amistad board member Alberto Magnan along with Dara Metz, Chelsea Visits Havana offers the Cuban art community and general public a window into the current art scene in New York. All of the featured artists are represented by galleries in the New York Citys Chelsea neighborhood, regarded as one of the international epicenters of contemporary art.

Since its founding in 1984, The Havana Biennial has been one of the most important showcases for contemporary art from Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean. Thousands of works by artists have been viewed by prominent critics, museum directors, gallery owners, editors and collectors from around the world.

Chelsea Visits Havana will be exhibited at the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes. Comprised of photography, painting, film and installations, it will enable the Cuban public to reflect on the contrast of affinities between their own contemporary masterpieces on view at the Museo and recent works created by American and foreign-born artists showing in the United States.

Chelsea Visits Havana is an historic opportunity for Fundación Amistad and its Bridges to Culture initiative, which uses the power of art to surmount the cultural, political and social boundaries between the United States and Cuba. This concept even supersedes the U.S. government trade embargo, which classifies Cuban art as a cultural asset and allows Americans to bring these works into the U.S. We hope you will consider supporting the mounting of this exhibition. This includes the creation of a catalog that will be available long after the exhibition ends and for a contribution of $500 or more Fundación Amistad will proudly list you as a sponsor in the catalog.
